Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif’s Message on World Polio Day, 24 October 2026

Islamabad: October 23, 2026

On World Polio Day, Pakistan joins the international community in reaffirming its unwavering commitment to the global effort to eradicate polio and pledges to sustain the fight against this debilitating disease until it is completely eliminated.

This day is significantly important for Pakistan, as we remain among the few countries still striving to achieve the goal of complete polio eradication. World Polio Day this year, is being observed under the theme, “One Day, One Focus: Ending Polio,” which underscores the importance of collective resolve and concerted action to eliminate this disease.

Federal, provincial and district governments, along with all relevant administrative institutions, remain steadfastly committed to the national polio eradication mission, while working in close collaboration with our valued international partners. All available resources are being mobilised to achieve this vital national objective.

Frontline workers are at the forefront of the efforts to combat poliovirus transmission, protect children from this preventable disease and raise public awareness about the importance of vaccination. More than 400,000 frontline workers, including 60 per cent women, are serving in Pakistan’s polio eradication programme.

Their dedication, commitment, courage and tireless service are deeply commendable. Today, the entire nation pays tribute to the frontline workers who have laid down their lives in the line of duty. These brave individuals deserve the highest recognition and unwavering support for their invaluable services.

Despite difficult terrain and security challenges, frontline workers continue to fulfill their responsibilities with dedication and courage. Ensuring that every child in the country receives the polio vaccine and has unhindered access to vaccination remains a foremost national priority.

Achieving this objective requires an active engagement of all influential individuals and institutions in society to strengthen public awareness, build trust and encourage families to accept polio vaccination. Their collective efforts are essential to achieving the goal of 100 per cent vaccination coverage among children across all communities and regions of the country.

Polio eradication is a shared national responsibility. Until we achieve our ultimate goal of a polio free Pakistan, the sustained cooperation of parents and caregivers, teachers, community representatives, religious leaders, the media, and our valued national and international partners will remain indispensable.

Pakistan deeply appreciates the support extended by the international community for polio eradication. The continued contributions of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), donor organisations and international partners have played a significant role in advancing Pakistan’s efforts to eradicate polio. This support remains instrumental to stop poliovirus transmission and securing a healthy, polio free future for our children and generations to come.

Let us join hands and be united in our national resolve, to build a polio-free future for Pakistan.
