Her Excellency Ms. Alexandra Berg von Linde, Ambassador of Sweden to Pakistan, called on the Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik, in Islamabad today. During the meeting, both sides discussed the evolving global situation and its potential implications.
The Ambassador congratulated Dr. Musadik Malik on his invitation to participate in the Arctic Circle Assembly, noting that the invitation reflects the growing global recognition that climate challenges transcend national borders and require collective international action. The Minister emphasised the importance of collaboration among countries that are directly affected by glacial melt, including those located in the Arctic region as well as countries in the Himalayan range. He stated that closer cooperation among these regions would help advance research and joint policy responses to address the growing challenges posed by glacier melt and climate change.
The Ambassador highlighted Sweden’s approach to climate action, noting that Sweden views climate engagement not only from a development perspective but also through active private sector participation. In this context, she informed the Minister that Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (SEB), a Swedish financial institution already engaged in green lending, is exploring the possibility of establishing a multi-country fund in Pakistan focused on water, infrastructure, and energy projects.
She explained that the initiative aims to help local companies reduce risks associated with climate-related investments and support sustainable development initiatives. The proposed fund is expected to collaborate with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to mobilize climate finance. The Ambassador requested the Ministry’s support and coordination in this regard in its capacity as Pakistan’s National Designated Authority for the GCF.
Dr. Musadik Malik welcomed the proposal and expressed keen interest in exploring the initiative further. He suggested arranging a detailed meeting between representatives of SEB and the Ministry in the coming week to discuss the proposal and potential areas of collaboration. The Minister noted that Pakistan offers significant opportunities for climate-focused investments, particularly in the water, infrastructure, and energy sectors.
