The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications is pleased to announce the progress in the deployment of the 2Africa Submarine Cable System, a transformative initiative that will greatly enhance Pakistan’s international connectivity. Facilitated by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in collaboration with Transworld Associates (TWA), this project will establish Pakistan as a key player in the global digital economy, strengthening its telecommunication infrastructure and enabling seamless global communication. The 2Africa Submarine Cable System is one of the largest and most advanced undersea cable projects in the world. Spanning an impressive 45,000 kilometers, the cable connects 46 locations across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Utilizing state-of-the-art SDM1 technology, it offers an exceptional data transmission capacity of 180Tbps. This initiative is backed by a global consortium of eight leading technology and telecommunications companies, including Meta and Vodafone, underscoring the project’s global significance. The deployment of the 2Africa cable in Pakistan is being carried out in multiple phases. Phase 1, involving Pre-Lay Shore End (PLSE) installation, began on December 1, 2024, at Hawksbay, Karachi. Phase 2, which includes the deep-sea cable-laying process, is scheduled to commence on April 1, 2025. The system is expected to be operational in Pakistan by the fourth quarter of 2025, marking a new era in digital connectivity for the nation. Once completed, the 2Africa Submarine Cable System will significantly enhance Pakistan’s digital capabilities. The project will improve internet speeds and reliability, support businesses and startups, and provide a robust foundation for technological innovation. This enhanced connectivity will enable Pakistan to better integrate into the global digital ecosystem, fostering economic growth and creating new opportunities for development across all sectors. Speaking on this development, the Minister for State of Information Technology and Telecommunications stated, “The 2Africa Submarine Cable System represents a critical step forward in our mission to transform Pakistan into a digitally connected nation. This initiative will not only strengthen our infrastructure but will also empower citizens and businesses to thrive in the digital economy.” The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing Pakistan’s digital transformation. The 2Africa Submarine Cable System is a testament to this vision and a key milestone in achieving global connectivity, ensuring that Pakistan is ready to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
