Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development Mr. Sajid Hussain Turi addresses a press conference at PID in Islamabad. Secretay OPHRD Mr. Zulfiquar Haider and other senior officers from Ministry along with Officer In charge CO Pakistan, Peter Buwembo and Manzoor Khaliq, Sr. Technical Specialist, Employment, DW, Peace and Resilience, ILO Geneva also attended the press conference. Minister for Overseas and Human Resource Development said that, “Pakistan monsoon floods crisis has impacted livelihood of more than 33 million people around country. This natural disaster has effected more than one million homes in 84 districts across the country. More than 1500 people are dead including children, livestock are lost, 3.6 million jobs have been lost, and thousands of kilometers of roads and bridges destroyed. Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, Mr. Sajid Hussain Turi said, “ Pakistan has experienced abnormal monsoon rainfall nearly ten times higher than usual, resulting in uncontrollable urban and flash floods, landslides, across the country. Our labourers and daily wages workers are the most affected by this this disaster.”He further said, “ILO is assisting the Pakistan in its response to the worst floods in a decade which have destroyed homes, crops, livelihoods and infrastructure and leaving millions vulnerable.” Mr. Sajid Hussain Turi expressed his gratitude to ILO for its support and intentions to work with Ministry of Overseas and Human Resource Development to provide employment to the workers affected by the flood. Mr. Turi further said, “This is the time for international solidarity with the victims of the floods in Pakistan. I request all international organizations including the United Nations to help Pakistan so that we can provide the necessary assistance to worker to help them have a sustain living.” Mian Akram, member, Employers Federation of Pakistan said that flood impacted thousands of people around country. While many industries in the country were disrupted, agricultural production has been significantly affected leaving agricultural land damaged and unable to cultivate. General Secretary, Pakistan Workers Federation, Ch Yaseen said that disruption of industries and agriculture is going to contribute to severe increase in poverty rates. Senior officers from ILO assured the Minister of ILO’s full support in uplifting the workers and extending technical assistance to both Employers Federation of Pakistan and Pakistan Workers Federation.
