PRESIDENT FOR ENHANCED EXCHANGES OF PARLIAMENTARY DELEGATION AMONG COMMON WEALTH COUNTRIES

President Dr Arif Alvi has underscored the need for enhanced exchanges of parliamentary delegations among the Common Wealth countries to further boost cooperation. He stated this during a meeting with the visiting Secretary General of Common Wealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Mr Stephen Twigg, who called on him, at Aiwan-e-Sadr, today. Acting Chairperson of CPA Executive Committee, Mr Ian Liddel-Grainger, MNA Ms Shandana Gulzar Khan, Secretary National Assembly, Mr Tahir Hussain, members CPA, Ms Emily Davies, and senior officials of the government attended the meeting. Welcoming the delegation, the President highlighted the role of the Parliament in strengthening and promoting democracy in the country. He briefed the delegation about the legislative measures taken by the Parliament for protecting and promoting the rights of women. He added that steps were being taken for the financial and social inclusion of women. Referring to the Kashmir dispute, the President regretted that United Nations hadn’t been able to implement the UNSC Resolutions to grant the right to self-determination to the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. He appreciated the role of CPA in promoting parliamentary cooperation among the member countries. Mr Stephen Twigg informed the President about his interactions with members of the Pakistani academia, students, and parliamentarians. He also lauded the steps taken by Pakistan for the empowerment of women.
