President Dr. Arif Alvi has urged the medical universities to focus on nursing programs by increasing the number of nursing students so as to meet the shortage of nurses in the country. He asked the medical universities to improve the quality and standard of medical education to make it attractive for foreign students. The President gave these directions while chairing the Senate meeting of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU), at Aiwan-e-Sadr, today. The Vice Chancellor of SZABMU, Prof. Tanwir Khaliq, gave a presentation about the role of university in providing medical education. The meeting endorsed the minutes of the first Senate Committee as well as approved service rules for the university. The Senate also approved annual budget of university, besides endorsing the nomination of two Deans for the Syndicate from Senate and one Member of Senate for Finance and Planning Committee. Highlighting the importance of research and quality education, the President stated that medical universities needed to focus on research and produce quality medical graduates to effectively combat challenges like Covid-19. He said that the governing bodies of universities, like Senate and Syndicate, were required to ensure good governance in educational institutions. The meeting was attended by SAPM on CDA, Mr. Ali Nawaz Awan, VC, SZABMU, Prof. Tanwir Khaliq, Pro-VC, SZABMU, Prof Syeda Batool Mazhar, Controller of Examination, Prof. Tariq Iqbal, Members of Senate, Senior Medical Professionals and Principals of Medical Colleges.
