President Dr. Arif Alvi has said that universities should link the higher education with the requirements of industrial and agriculture sectors of the country. He also urged all the Chancellors to play an active role in the promotion of higher education. The President said this while chairing the Chancellor’s Conference at the Aiwan-e-Sadr, today. Federal Minister for Federal Education & Professional Training Shafqat Mahmood, Governor of Punjab/Chancellor of Universities in Punjab Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar, Governor of Sindh /Chancellor of Universities in Sindh Imran Ismail, Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa/Chancellor of Universities in KP Shah Farman, Governor of Balochistan/Chancellor of Universities in Balochistan Justice (R) Amanullah Khan Yasinzai and President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir/ Chancellor of Universities of AJ&K Sardar Masood Khan attended the Conference. The President stated that universities are focal points for creating knowledge, therefore, they must perform objective research and transfer knowledge through hands-on approach of its researchers. He added that universities must support knowledge creation in academically diverse disciplines. He emphasized that universities need to focus on creating knowledge capital and technological development to enable Pakistan to join the ranks of industrially advanced countries. He stressed that Pakistani universities also need to develop and strengthen international linkages with reputed foreign universities in order to benefit from the experiences and expertise of the latter wherever required. The President underscored the need for launching new subjects such as Artificial Intelligence, Nano-Technology and Quantum Computing in the educational institutions of the country. Moreover, he added that emphasis should also be laid on the training in Art and Journalism. He further said that in order to compete with global challenges and for transforming Pakistan as a developed country, universities need to play their vital role particularly for the knowledge based economy, access to quality higher education, community engagement and giving back to society, facilities for innovative research and inculcating the culture of entrepreneurship in students. *-*-*
