PR No.41 NDMA Takes Initiative For Seismic Assessment Islamabad

Chairman NDMA, Major General Asghar Nawaz headed 2nd Conference of the Seismic Working Group which has been requisitioned by NDMA to plan, coordinate and execute a host of activities related to earthquakes and seismology at the National level.

First meeting of the Seismic Working Group was held on 23rd November 2015. The second meeting deliberated upon progress made on points discussed in the first meeting as well as to chalk out future directions. The meeting was attended by experts and representatives of Geological Survey of Pakistan, Pakistan Metrological Department, Pakistan Engineering Council, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, Quaid-e-Azam University, WAPDA, National Highway Authority, ERRA, NESPAK, Survey of Pakistan, University of Engineering & Technology Peshawar, Survey of Pakistan, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Resources and SUPARCO.

It was noted with satisfaction that all departments at National level have shared the data with each other regarding seismic studies/ events, maps and related material. Alongside that Pakistan Metrological Department established a comprehensive portal to give an overview of ongoing seismic activity for which preliminary PC-1 has been made for the updation of Geological Survey of Pakistan maps which are old and Standard Operating Procedure has been formulated for carrying out pre-earthquake monitoring, field assessment and post earthquake damage assessment. During the meeting it was also informed that Pakistan Engineering Council and NDMA are collaborating for revision of National Building Codes through NESPAK for which necessary formalities are ongoing.

It was highlighted that initiative to strengthen coordination among all concerned Departments has made positive improvement with respect to knowledge sharing and clarity in direction for the future. It was very well acknowledged by the participants of the conference.
