PR No. 93 PR SHALL BE GIVEN PRECEDENCE IN PAKISTAN’S ECONOMY Islamabad: December 12, 2017

Mrs. Parveen Agha, Chairperson, Ministry of Railways chaired the meeting with IMF Post Program monitoring Mission on Tuesday in Ministry of Railways. Ms. Teresa Daban Sanhez, Senior Economist, IMF, was briefed about performance of Pakistan Railways (PR). The main rationale of the meeting was to estimate that PR shall be given priority in Pakistan’s Economy. She was briefed that current government has improved the Pakistan Railways by focusing on business development, increasing the rolling stock, infrastructure development and improving the governance of PR. In last 4 years, the number of passengers has been improved to 55%, freight to 31 % and other activities to 14%.PR is looking forward to unambiguous separation of policy functions and operational functions of PR. Ministry of Railways represents policy functions and PR Head Quarter represents operational functions. It will also be run as a commercial enterprise to maximize the profits. The role of PR in CPEC was also discussed.
