Fourth meeting of National Climate Change
Policy Implementation Committee held at Ministry of Climate Change chaired by
Federal Minister for Climate Change Senator Mushahidullah Khan.
‘Climate Change is our national issues and
requires efforts to combat it at many levels”. Said by the Federal Minister for
Climate Change Senator Mushahidullah khan while addressing the participants of
the meeting He further said all provinces should take interest and prepare
their projects on emergency basis and we will try to get funding for the
projects.
He also emphasized that provinces should
make efforts to implement the actions assigned under National Climate Change
Policy. He also highlighted that today whole world is celebrating International
mountain Day. Pakistan is geographically located in area where highest Mountain
ranges Karakoram, Hindu Kush and Himalayas. So these mountain ranges are under
threats of glacier melting due to Climate Change that is directly impacting
people of Pakistan in forms of floods.
These issues are also discussed under the
National Climate Change Policy.First Director General Environment Irfan tariq
Briefed about the decision taken in previous meeting. Then all provinces
briefed about their actions. Punjab briefed that they have formulated
provincial smog policy that includes issuance of health advisory, Issuance of traffic advisory, Ban on burning of crop residue to prevent smoke-emission, Shutting down of major smoke emitting industries, Introduction of low-sulphur fuels, Adoption of Euro-II Standards for reduction of vehicular emission
etc.
They also
briefed abouth their Clean Air Action Plan. Sindh representative told we have
submitted 86 projects on priority and short term basis. They also informed that
Sindh province has also drafted its own Climate Change Policy. The Azad Jammu
and Kashmir has assigned water responsibility to single entity. They also
contributed in National Water Policy.
They are doing upstream investments (water management) to safeguard infrastructure in downstream like energy, food, water. On priority basis they are doing number of projects that includes protection of precious Agri land, livestock health services and solar tube wells. Ministry of Science and Technology and Baluchistan also updated about their actions. The meeting was attended by the Secretary Ministry of Climate Change, Joint Secretary Admin Usman Yaqoob, Chief Executive of Global Change Impact Study Centre Dr. Tariq Banuri Provincial representatives and official from Ministry of Health, Ministry of Science and Technology, Metrological Department.
