President Mamnoon Hussain has said that the diabetes can be countered by avoiding overeating and stress and through regular exercise and use of medicine.

The President said this while addressing the participants of Symbolic Walk for Diabetes on the occasion of World Diabetes Day at the Aiwan-e-Sadr, Islamabad on Wednesday. The walk was led by President Mamnoon Hussain before which he released pigeons to express the resolve to have diabetes free Pakistan. He also pressed the button to illuminate the Aiwan-e-Sadr building with blue lights to mark the World Diabetes Day.

The President expressed his concern at the spread of diabetes in the country and directed the concerned departments to take effective measures for controlling and preventing the spread of diabetes through awareness campaigns.

The President advised that the people should adopt a healthy lifestyle to avoid contracting the disease. The President asked all the institutions working to contain diabetes to coordinate their efforts in a concerted manner to achieve better results. The President further said that the scope of these efforts should not be kept limited to cities only but it should be expanded to rural and far flung areas to defeat diabetes. The President advised the women to play their role by paying attention in promoting healthy lifestyle in their families to prevent this fatal disease.

Doctors and students from different medical colleges and educational institutions and members of civil society participated in the walk. Chairman Higher Education Commission Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed and Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University’s Vice Chancellor Dr. Javed Akram were also present on the occasion.
