PR No. 49 SAPM’S VISIT TO OSLO AS PRIME MINISTER’S SPECIAL ENVOY Islamabad: September 6, 2016.

The Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, Syed Tariq Fatemi, currently on an official visit to Oslo (Norway), as a Special Envoy of the Prime Minister, held a meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister of Norway, Mr. Tore Hattrem today.

The SAPM highlighted that Pakistan and Norway enjoy close and cordial relations that are based on friendship, trust and understanding. The cooperative ties have received a powerful boost as a result of the Prime Minister’s successful visit to Oslo.

Besides bilateral issues, the SAPM sought Norway’s support for Pakistan’s membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG). Presenting Pakistan’s point of view, the SAPM emphasized the need for equal treatment of all applicants, based on objective and non-discriminatory criteria for membership. He reiterated that Pakistan’s application stood on solid grounds of technical expertise, capability and well-established commitments to nuclear safety and security.

The Special Assistant assured his interlocutors that Pakistan’s export controls regime was fully harmonized with those of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), Missile Technology Control Regime (MTRC) and Australia Group. He emphasized that Pakistan was a strong advocate of meaningful non-proliferation initiatives that were fair, equal and non-discriminatory.

The two sides agreed to identify new areas of common interest to further strengthen the relationship in diverse sectors.
