A solemn flag hoisting ceremony to commemorate the 70th Independence Day of Pakistan was held at the Pakistan High Commission, Kuala Lumpur today. The High Commissioner of Pakistan to Malaysia, H.E. Mr. Syed Hassan Raza hoisted Pakistan’s national flag.  The Minister of Commerce, Engr. Mr. Khurram Dastgir, who is on an official visit to Malaysia, participated in the ceremony as chief guest. The event was attended by a large number of Pakistani nationals living in Malaysia including prominent businessmen, notables and students, says a press release received here today from Kuala Lumpur.

The messages of the President and Prime Minister of Pakistan were read on the occasion. President Mamnoon Hussain in his message stated, government and all state institutions were taking effective steps to counter terrorism and extremism and its elimination from the country.  He commended the government for adopting sound economic policies that were helping to attract foreign investment.

In his message, Prime Minister Mohammad Nawaz Sharif while felicitating the nation on Independence Day, paid tributes to the martyrs from all segments of the nation who sacrificed their lives to protect the nation. He also expressed deep sorrow for the recently martyred innocent people in Quetta. In particular, the Prime Minister expressed solidarity with the freedom loving people of Indian held Kashmir who have demonstrated that their aspirations for freedom are alive and indomitable.

In his address, H.E. Syed Hassan Raza, the High Commissioner of Pakistan paid homage to father of the nation  Quaid-e-Azam Muahmmad Ali Jinnah as well as tributes to the martyrs who laid their lives for the country. He also highlighted the gross human rights violations in Jammu & Kashmir and called upon India to cease human rights violation and settle the Kashmir issue according to wishes of Kashmiri people.  The High Commissioner also highlighted the efforts of the Mission to extend all possible assistance to the Pakistani community settled in Malaysia.

The Minister of Commerce, H.E. Mr. Khurram Dastgir, in his address, pointed out that the Government had successfully led the fight against terrorism and extremism. He added that the Government was also making efforts to end the power crisis in the country and by the end of 2017 people will have relief. He also mentioned various steps taken by the government which has helped in turning around the economy since 2013 under the leadership of the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The Commerce Minister added that irrespective of our political views, we are all united to make Pakistan a prosperous and peaceful country.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, Pakistani businessmen in Kuala Lumpur presented a memento to the Honorable Commerce Minister.
