The 70th Independence Day of Pakistan was celebrated with national spirit and enthusiasm at the Pakistan High Commission, New Delhi, today, says a press release received here today from India.
The Pakistan flag was raised by High Commissioner Abdul Basit at an elegant and impressive flag hoisting ceremony held on the Chancery’s lush green lawns.
Speaking on the occasion, the High Commissioner highlighted the significance of the independence movement and the huge sacrifices rendered by “our forefathers to realize their dream, namely, Pakistan”. He emphasized that Pakistan was a blessing and that it was destined to become a bastion of peace and prosperity. The High Commissioner said the people of Pakistan were united to overcome the internal and external challenges and thwart all conspiracies aimed at destablising Pakistan.
On Pakistan and India relations, High Commissioner Basit said Pakistan had always desired and endeavoured to have cooperative relations with India on the basis of sovereign equality and peaceful resolution of the bilateral disputes.
The High Commissioner stressed that the political aspiration of the people of Jammu and Kashmir could not be suppressed. Nor could anyone belittle or wish away their legitimate struggle and enormous sacrifices. It was incumbent upon the international community to ensure implementation of the relevant UN resolutions to settle the long-standing Jammu & Kashmir dispute. The High Commissioner said, “Pakistan will continue extending its full diplomatic, political and moral support to the valiant people of Jammu & Kashmir till they get their right to self determination”.
Students of the Pakistan High Commission School presented national songs and tableaus. Ms. Summiya Basit, wife of the High Commissioner, gave away prizes and gifts to the teachers and children of the school.
Earlier, Syed Haider Shah, Deputy High Commissioner read out the Independence Day messages from the President and the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
