MESSAGE FROM BIBI ASIFA BHUTTO ZARDARI MNA, FIRST LADY OF PAKISTAN, ON THE 15TH DEATH ANNIVERSARY OF BEGUM NUSRAT BHUTTO

Islamabad: October 22, 2026

On the 15th death anniversary of my beloved grandmother, Begum Nusrat Bhutto, I remember her with a heart full of love, pride and longing. She was known as Madar-e-Jamhooriat, the Mother of Democracy. To me, she was also the grandmother whose courage, compassion and strength remain a source of inspiration.

My grandmother endured more pain than any mother should have to bear. She lost her husband, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, her sons, Shaheed Mir Murtaza Bhutto and Shaheed Shahnawaz Bhutto, and her beloved daughter, my mother, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. These losses were immense, yet she continued to stand by her principles and her belief in the people of Pakistan. Her life taught us that courage is not the absence of pain, but the determination to stand firm despite it.

Begum Nusrat Bhutto played a leading role in the struggle for the restoration of democracy during one of the most difficult periods in our country’s history. She faced repeated arrests, detention and physical violence under military rule. On 16 December 1977, she was injured in a police baton charge at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. Even these experiences did not silence her. She stood with the people when doing so carried a heavy personal cost.

Her courage was also reflected in the way she supported and guided my mother, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, who went on to lead Pakistan. Together, they showed that women can shape the course of history, challenge injustice and take on the highest responsibilities of public life.

For me, remembering my grandmother is both a personal act of love and a reminder of the responsibility that comes with the legacy she left behind. Her example speaks directly to the young women and girls of Pakistan. I want every girl, whether she lives in a village, a small town or a large city, to know that her aspirations matter. She deserves the opportunity to receive an education, develop her abilities, speak with confidence and help shape her own future. No girl should be made to believe that her ambitions are beyond her reach simply because she is a girl.

Fifteen years have passed since my grandmother left us, but the passage of time has not diminished what she means to our family or what her life represents to the country. I miss her, just as I miss my mother. Their absence is deeply personal, but I find strength in the values they lived by and the example they left for the generations that follow.

My grandmother’s legacy lives on in the courage of women who stand up for what they believe in, in the girls who pursue their education against the odds and in every person who continues to work for a Pakistan where people can live with freedom, opportunity and respect.

I pray that Almighty Allah grants my beloved grandmother the highest place in Jannah. May her life continue to guide and inspire us.
