On the occasion of National Newspaper Readership Day, I extend my appreciation and pay tribute to newspapers and all those professionals associated with journalism, particularly the members of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), as well as newspaper readers across the country.
Newspapers reflect the political, economic and social dimensions of our national life and hold an important place in fostering an informed and conscious society.
Throughout different periods of history, newspapers across the world have played a commendable role in promoting awareness, shaping public opinion, and providing people with access to credible information and diverse perspectives.
During independence movement, newspapers also served as an effective voice for the Muslims of the subcontinent and made a significant contribution to fostering political consciousness, unity and a shared sense of purpose.
Following the creation of Pakistan, the press has continued to make valuable contributions towards strengthening democracy, promoting transparency, and keeping citizens informed about matters of national and international importance.
In the rapidly evolving information landscape of today, digital and social media have transformed the ways in which news is accessed and consumed. Yet, the enduring relevance and importance of newspapers remain undiminished.
At a time when fake news, misinformation and misleading information can spread with unprecedented speed, the importance of credible journalism, professional standards and responsible reporting has assumed even greater significance.
Strong and credible editorial processes are essential to ensuring that readers have access to news, analysis and informed perspectives grounded in research, verification and journalistic integrity.
I encourage citizens, particularly the younger generation, to cultivate the habit of reading newspapers. Beyond keeping readers abreast of current events, newspapers provide valuable context, broaden knowledge, deepen understanding of contemporary affairs and foster awareness of civic responsibilities.
On this occasion, I commend editors, journalists, photographers, press workers and all others associated with the newspaper industry for their valuable contribution to national life and for their continued dedication, hard work and commitment to the cause of responsible journalism.
