Federal Minister for Energy (Power Division) Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari held a meeting with German Ambassador Ina Lepel at the Power Division. The Minister briefed the Ambassador on ongoing reforms and development initiatives in the energy sector.
The Minister stated that around 55 percent of Pakistan’s energy mix currently comes from clean sources. The government is working to gradually increase this share to 90 percent. He said that Pakistan is generating a significant amount of electricity from indigenous energy resources which is strengthening energy self-reliance and sustainability. He also informed that around 800 megawatts of renewable energy is being planned through a competitive market mechanism. The government will not pursue new power purchases beyond already committed agreements. He added that Pakistan remained close to 70 percent self-sufficiency in the energy sector last year.
The Minister also shared progress on the privatization of distribution companies. He said that three out of eleven DISCOs have been selected for initial privatization and more companies will be added in the next phase.
Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari highlighted the importance of battery energy storage systems (BESS). He said these systems are essential for a modern and stable energy network. He added that a BESS project for LESCO is under consideration with support from GIZ. The Minister also emphasized the need for investment in transmission infrastructure. He stated that the expansion and upgrade of the transmission network requires significant funding. Pakistan Business Council and other private stakeholders are being engaged in this effort.
He proposed the establishment of a Pakistan Germany Energy Cooperation Framework to further strengthen bilateral collaboration. He also stressed the importance of creating enabling conditions for German financial institutions to participate in investment and financing opportunities in Pakistan.
Ambassador Ina Lepel said that a climate cooperation framework already exists between the two countries which includes the energy sector. She noted that both sides may explore ways to further enhance its effectiveness. She also mentioned an ongoing project worth around 300 million euros which is currently under implementation.
