Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry on Sunday said that Gwadar Port is rapidly emerging as a secure and strategic maritime hub as shifting regional dynamics prompt global shipping lines to seek safer alternatives to traditional Gulf routes.
Junaid Chaudhry’s remarks came as the specialized vessel M/V HMO LEADER (IMO 9169811) successfully berthed at Gwadar Port, carrying 35 pieces of general transshipment cargo. "The development marks a significant operational milestone and reflects a growing trend of international maritime operators redirecting cargo flows towards Pakistan’s southwestern coastline," the minister added.
Junaid Chaudhry noted that continued tensions in the region have disrupted established shipping corridors, creating opportunities for Gwadar Port to position itself as a reliable and secure transit point. “Gwadar is increasingly being recognized for its strategic location and modern infrastructure, offering a safe haven for transshipment activities,” he said.
He added that a rising number of international shipping lines are approaching the port to utilize its facilities for cargo storage and onward movement. To facilitate this transition, port authorities are offering free storage for transshipment cargo, a move aimed at attracting greater volumes and enhancing Gwadar’s competitiveness in the region.
The Minister highlighted that the port, along with its integrated free zone, currently has the capacity to handle up to 16,000 TEUs of containerized cargo, in addition to 90,000 square meters allocated for general cargo storage.
Junaid Chaudhry viewed the successful handling of the HMO LEADER as a practical demonstration of Gwadar’s growing operational capabilities, noting "with a combination of financial incentives, expanding capacity and a comparatively stable environment, the port is steadily advancing towards becoming a key regional trade hub."
Junaid Chaudhry emphasized that Gwadar Port would play a central role in promoting Pakistan’s blue economy, strengthening maritime trade and enhancing connectivity across regional and international markets.
