Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has returned to Pakistan following a highly successful visit to the United States, where he participated in the Joint Annual Parliamentary Hearing of the United Nations and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). Throughout the visit, the Chairman forcefully presented Pakistan’s principled stance on global forums, emphasizing the respect for international law and the peaceful resolution of long-standing disputes in accordance with the UN Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions.

Addressing the inaugural session of the 2026 Annual IPU Hearing, Chairman Gilani asserted that democratic, transparent, and accountable decision-making is indispensable for enhancing the credibility and effectiveness of the United Nations. He highlighted that parliaments play a pivotal role in ensuring the implementation of international commitments at the national level, noting that the inclusion of public representatives in global governance is a critical necessity of modern times.

The Chairman described the United Nations as the fundamental pillar of multilateral cooperation, stating that contemporary global challenges cannot be solved by any single nation in isolation.

Reaffirming his commitment to fostering synergy between UN, the IPU, and other parliamentary bodies, the Chairman referenced his previous patronage of the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers' Conference. He emphasized that such collaboration is vital to ensuring the successful achievement of shared global goals and sustainable development targets.

During his stay in New York, Chairman Gilani held separate high-level meetings with IPU President Dr. Tulia Ackson and Secretary-General Martin Chungong. These discussions focused on Pakistan’s dignified and proactive parliamentary diplomacy. He underscored Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to democracy and the rule of law, describing the IPU as the most effective platform for dialogue, inclusive governance, and international cooperation among the world’s parliaments.

The Chairman noted Pakistan’s long-standing engagement with the IPU, highlighting the Parliament of Pakistan’s consistent and active role in IPU assemblies, standing committees, and general debates. He reiterated that Pakistan maintains a clear and principled position on vital issues such as global peace, sustainable development, climate change, and effective multilateralism.

On the subject of climate change, the Chairman referenced the catastrophic floods of 2022 and other extreme weather events. He pointed out that despite Pakistan's minimal contribution to global warming, it remains one of the most vulnerable countries to its impacts. He called for climate justice, the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities," and the urgent need for financial and technical support for developing nations.

Regarding global peace and human rights, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani identified dialogue and diplomacy as the only viable paths for conflict resolution. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast support for the right to self-determination for the people of Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Furthermore, he emphasized the necessity of a just solution to the Palestinian issue, stating that the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state is essential for lasting peace in the Middle East.

Additionally, the high-level parliamentary delegation led by the Chairman met with the President of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, at the UN Headquarters. During this meeting, the Chairman reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering support for the UN as the central pillar for promoting international peace, security, and human rights.

Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani specifically stressed the need for resolving the Kashmir dispute in accordance with Security Council resolutions to ensure lasting stability in South Asia. He also raised concerns regarding recent developments related to the Indus Waters Treaty, warning that unilateral actions violate international agreements and water laws, potentially leading to regional instability affecting the lives and livelihoods of millions.

The President of the UN General Assembly welcomed the Pakistani delegation, appreciating Pakistan's high-level participation in the IPU hearing and lauding the country's active and constructive role within the United Nations framework.

Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani’s visit to the United States stands as a testament to Pakistan’s active parliamentary diplomacy and principled foreign policy, successfully projecting the nation's interests, democratic values, and commitment to global cooperation on the world stage.

The Chairman Senate attended various receptions hosted by Pakistani community. He lauded Pakistani diasporas’ positive role and said the community is playing vital role in promoting bilateral relations. Community leaders and Pakistan Peoples Party US Chapter leaders welcomed Mr. Gilani and his delegation. Pakistan permanent Representative to UN Asim Iftikhar also hosted reception in honor of the delegation.
