Pakistan has called for the respect for international law and meaningful progress in the peaceful settlement of long-standing disputes, in accordance with the UN Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions,
Delivering national statement during the inaugural session of the IPU Annual Hearing 2026 at the UN headquarters, Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, Chairman Senate, called for democratic, transparent, and accountable decision-making in order to enhance the UN’s credibility, adding that Parliaments are indispensable partners in ensuring national ownership of international commitments.
“Reform is essential. But it must be “Reform for All, Privilege for None”, he emphasized.
Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani is leading a six-member high-level parliamentary delegation from Pakistan to take part in the two-day Annual Parliamentary Hearing at the UN.
Senator Saleem Mandviwala, Senator Farooq H. Naek, Senator Muhammad Abdul Qadir, Senator Syed Faisal Ali Subzwari, and Malik Muhammad Amir Dogar, member of the National Assembly of Pakistan are members of the parliamentary delegation.
The Chairman Senate highlighted the continuing importance of the United Nations as the cornerstone of multilateral cooperation, stressing that the organization’s universal membership and Charter-based mandate remain central to promoting global peace and security.
Senator Gilani noted that overlapping crises, including climate change, violent conflicts, and growing social and economic inequalities, continue to challenge the UN’s ability to deliver effectively across its three interlinked pillars. He said that these pressures disproportionately affect the Global South, eroding hard-won development gains.
He underscored that no single nation can address these systemic challenges alone. Renewed trust in the United Nations, he said, must be rooted in strengthened multilateral cooperation, backed by adequate, predictable, and sustainable financing to enable the organization to fulfill its mandates effectively.
Reflecting on his stewardship of the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers Conference last year, he expressed commitment to fostering synergy between the UN, the IPU, and the ISC to advance shared global aspirations.
Held under the theme “Parliaments and the United Nations: Better together, delivering for the people,” the 2026 IPU Annual Hearing focuses on advancing peace, sustainable development, democratic governance, and effective multilateralism, including contributions to the UN’s Pact for the Future and broader reform efforts.
