PR No. 84

Clarification Regarding Status of WWI Monument and Departmental Advisory

Islamabad: February 06, 2026

It is clarified that the World War I (WWI) Monument is not a protected monument under the Antiquities Act, 1975. The monument is located within the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) under the administrative control of Capital Development Authority (CDA). The Department of Archaeology and Museums made advice to bring it under formal protection. However, due to the non-provision of the required revenue record and other legal prerequisites, the monument could not be notified as a protected site.

Nevertheless, the monument possesses cultural and historical significance. In line with internationally recognized best practices for commemorative and historical structures, the Department of Archaeology and Museums provided advisory guidance to Capital Development Authority (CDA) for provision of revenue record to bring the monument under the formal protection. The Department emphasized that any handling of the memorial should be undertaken with due care, dignity, and conservation sensitivity to preserve and safeguard its historical value.

However, it is requested the concerned authorities to restore, preserve and re-erect the World War (WWI) Monument on the similar place and area according to its dignity, prestige and honor.
