Ministry of Food Initiates Urgent Steps to Stabilize Potato Prices

Islamabad: February 04, 2026

The Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFSR), under the leadership of Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain, has taken timely and coordinated measures to address the serious issue of declining potato prices, with the aim of safeguarding farmers’ interests and stabilizing the agricultural market.

The sharp decline in potato prices is primarily attributed to the closure of the Afghanistan border, which has traditionally been a major export destination for Pakistani potatoes. The disruption in exports has resulted in surplus supply in the domestic market, adversely affecting growers and exporters.

To resolve this issue, MNFSR, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) and the Ministry of Commerce, is actively exploring alternative export destinations and trade routes to ensure continuity of exports and market access for Pakistani potatoes.

As a facilitative measure for farmers and exporters, the ministry has informed farmers that the challan fee for the issuance of the Phytosanitary Certificate is only Rs. 2,500.

In addition, MNFSR has directed the Ministry of Commerce to identify foreign importers to facilitate and accelerate potato exports. The Ministry has identified 36 countries as potential export markets for Pakistani potatoes and has shared the list with exporters.

Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting farmers, enhancing agricultural exports, and ensuring sustainable solutions through market diversification and effective inter-ministerial coordination.

The Ministry of National Food Security and Research remains fully engaged with all relevant stakeholders to promote agricultural growth and improve export performance.
