Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain met with the German Federal Minister for Agriculture, Food, and Regional Identity, Mr. Alois Rainer, in Germany to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and Germany in the agriculture and livestock sectors. The two leaders emphasized the importance of enhancing collaboration to improve agricultural practices, food security, and sustainable development.
Minister Hussain highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to deepening ties with Germany, particularly in agriculture and livestock, which are essential for food security, rural livelihoods, and economic growth. He stressed that agriculture remains a cornerstone of Pakistan’s economy, with the livestock sub-sector being a major contributor, providing income and food security to millions of rural households.
Both ministers acknowledged Germany’s global leadership in agricultural research, innovation, and sustainable farming systems. Minister Hussain expressed Pakistan’s interest in benefiting from German expertise in areas such as livestock breeding, food safety, animal health, and climate-smart agriculture. They discussed the potential for cooperation in enhancing agricultural productivity through modern technologies, promoting resource-efficient farming systems, and addressing climate change challenges. Minister Hussain also highlighted the need for collaboration in livestock and dairy development, including genetic improvement, veterinary services, and strengthening value chains for dairy and meat products.
The discussion also covered opportunities for value addition, post-harvest management, and food processing, aiming to improve the competitiveness of Pakistani agricultural and livestock products in international markets. Both ministers agreed on the importance of capacity building through technical training and vocational education for farmers and agricultural professionals. Minister Hussain appreciated Germany’s ongoing development cooperation and expressed Pakistan’s interest in joint programs and pilot projects that benefit smallholders, women, and youth in rural areas.
