Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Gilgit-Baltistan and SAFRON, Engineer Amir Muqam, has said that Pakistan stands shoulder to shoulder with the Kashmiris in their just struggle for freedom and will make every possible effort to ensure that the people of Kashmir are granted their right to self-determination.
In his message on the occasion of the Right to Self-Determination Day of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, Federal Minister Engineer Amir Muqam termed all measures taken by the Indian government on August 5, 2019, as unilateral and illegal, and in violation of the United Nations Charter, the Fourth Geneva Convention, and international laws. He emphasized that the Kashmir issue must be resolved in accordance with the UN Charter and the resolutions passed by the UN Security Council.
Praising Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for raising the Kashmir issue at the United Nations General Assembly, Engineer Amir Muqam said that the sacrifices of the Kashmiri people will not go in vain. He reiterated that Pakistan will continue its full moral, diplomatic, and political support to the Kashmiris until the final resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
Every year, January 5 is observed as the ‘Right to Self-Determination Day’ by the Kashmiris. On this day in 1949, the United Nations Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP) adopted a historic resolution guaranteeing a free and fair plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir to enable the Kashmiri people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination. The right to self-determination is a fundamental principle of the UN Charter and international law.
He said that the United Nations should ensure the implementation of its resolutions and grant the Kashmiri people their right to self-determination so that lasting peace in South Asia can be ensured.
