Islamabad: September 19, 2025

Federal Minister for Water Resources, Muhammad Mueen Watto, held a meeting today with Mr. Fuad Pashayev, UNESCO Representative in Pakistan, to discuss areas of collaboration in flood management, water governance, and sustainable water resource management. Mr. Pashayev also conveyed deep condolences over the loss of lives caused by the recent floods across Pakistan this year.

During the meeting, it was highlighted that the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR), under the Ministry of Water Resources, will work closely with UNESCO to promote the integration of scientific tools and research findings for informed decision-making to enhance water security in the country. Furthermore, the collaboration aims to strengthen capacity building of stakeholders, including end-users, to ensure sustainable water resource management across all water use sectors.

The discussion also focused on the preservation of the traditional karez system, a vital component of Pakistan’s cultural and water heritage. The Federal Minister sought UNESCO’s expert advice on the creation of artificial lakes to recycle and reuse rainwater for agricultural purposes, thereby improving water security and supporting sustainable agricultural development.

Both sides agreed to continue working in close coordination to address water-related challenges and improve resilience against floods and the impacts of climate change.
