PR No. 260

Islamabad: July 23, 2025

The spokesperson for the Power Division has issued a clarification regarding recent news reports concerning the Audit Report for the financial year 2023–24. The spokesperson emphasized that the report pertains to the previous fiscal year and does not relate to the tenure of the current government. Therefore, interpreting its findings in the context of the reforms and initiatives undertaken by the current government would be misleading.

It was further clarified that the audit report remains in its preliminary stages and additional documents and evidence will be provided as part of the standard review process. The report will undergo detailed scrutiny through appropriate forums to ensure that a complete and factual picture emerges.

The spokesperson noted that the Power Division had already initiated comprehensive reforms in the billing system well before the release of the audit report. Under the leadership of Federal Minister for Power, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, critical and long-overdue measures have been implemented to address issues such as overbilling and inaccurate meter readings.

A key milestone in these reforms has been the launch of the Power Smart App, under the initiative "Apna Meter Apni Reading". This platform empowers electricity consumers to submit their own meter readings, significantly improving billing accuracy and transparency. To date, more than one million users across the country have downloaded the application.

The spokesperson further stated that the Federal Minister has declared the upcoming year as one focused on consumer facilitation and enhanced service delivery. As a tangible result of these ongoing reforms, the sector has witnessed a notable financial improvement. In June 2024, total losses in the power sector were estimated at PKR 591 billion. By comparison, this figure has been reduced by approximately PKR 191 billion during the current fiscal year.
