Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Mr. Rana Tanveer Hussain, attended an important event organized by Ittehad Chemicals Limited (ICL).The event was organized to showcase the company’s technological advancements, product diversification, and environmental initiatives.
While appreciating the industrial achievements of ICL, the Minister emphasized that the chemical sector plays a vital role in supporting agriculture by providing essential inputs such as caustic soda, chlorine, surfactants, and water treatment chemicals. He stated that sustainable agricultural growth in Pakistan requires a strong partnership between the agriculture and chemical industries, driven by innovation, climate-smart technologies, and local production capabilities.
Mr. Rana Tanveer Hussain said that the Ministry is working on a comprehensive strategy to promote the use of locally produced, climate-resilient agricultural inputs. These include crop-safe surfactants, micronutrients, water-efficient solutions, and soil conditioners. He highlighted the need to ensure that industrial chemicals used in agriculture meet the highest environmental and safety standards.
During the event, the Minister acknowledged the role of Ittehad Chemicals in operating one of the world’s most energy-efficient caustic soda plants, with a capacity of 425 MT/day. He noted the company’s diversification into surfactants in 2019, and its rapid recognition as a quality supplier to both national and multinational clients. He also praised ICL’s environmental commitment, citing the installation of an effluent treatment plant and emission control mechanisms as positive steps towards responsible industrial operations.
The Minister also stressed the importance of linking industrial research and academia, encouraging companies like ICL to partner with agriculture universities and public research centers to develop customized solutions for Pakistan’s crops and climatic conditions. He noted that investment in clean technology, R&D, and professional training is essential to unlock Pakistan’s industrial and agricultural potential.
In his remarks, Mr. Rana Tanveer Hussain reiterated that the Ministry’s vision is not only limited to increasing food production but ensuring that the means of production are sustainable, inclusive, and locally empowered. He called upon industrial leaders to focus on fair pricing, product safety, and transparency in supply chains so that farmers across Pakistan can benefit from quality inputs without exploitation.
He concluded by stating that initiatives like those taken by Ittehad Chemicals should become the norm rather than the exception. He reaffirmed the government’s support for companies that invest in people, planet, and productivity and contribute positively to Pakistan’s journey toward agricultural self-sufficiency, environmental responsibility, and economic resilience.
