NDMA Issues GLOF Alert for Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Islamabad, 4th July 2025: National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for the glaciated regions of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), following a significant rise in temperatures and the arrival of an upcoming weather system in northern Pakistan. The persistent high temperatures may accelerate snow and glacier melt, increasing the risk of sudden GLOF events in vulnerable valleys and surrounding areas during the current and coming week.
In view of the prevailing situation, NDMA has advised all concerned federal ministries and departments, respective provincial governments, line departments including PDMA KP, GBDMA, DDMAs, municipal administrations, and civic agencies to remain on high alert and ensure full preparedness. NDMA has directed PDMA KP, GBDMA, and respective DDMAs to proactively monitor and carry out surveillance of all vulnerable GLOF sites to facilitate timely early warning, evacuation, and response. DDMAs have been directed to conduct evacuation drills in high-risk communities to ensure community-level readiness, while rescue services including Rescue 1122, civil defence, fire brigades, and ambulance services are to remain fully equipped and available during the forecasted period.
NDMA has also emphasized the need for public awareness campaigns in at-risk areas to alert citizens about the dangers of GLOFs. Communities have been advised to avoid unnecessary movement near nullahs, streams, and fast-flowing water channels. Warnings have been issued against crossing such areas, especially by vehicle, and residents of low-lying regions are urged to stay cautious and be prepared to act on evacuation alerts. Law enforcement agencies and traffic police have been directed to guide travelers regarding potential hazards, while NH&MP and other relevant authorities will coordinate traffic management and route redirection in case of emergencies.
In addition, PDMA KP, GBDMA, and DDMAs have been directed to ensure that designated evacuation sites are operational and well-stocked with necessary supplies. Emergency response equipment must be preplaced at strategic locations, with close coordination maintained with departments such as NHA, FWO, and C&W for timely restoration of any obstructed or damaged routes. Tourists are strongly advised to avoid trekking in glacier-prone regions, and to refrain from taking pictures or visiting glaciers to avoid any untoward incidents. Concerned departments have also been asked to share routine situation updates with NDMA, while a detailed map outlining the most vulnerable GLOF sites in KP and GB has been circulated to support targeted preparedness actions.
NDMA reiterates its commitment to safeguarding vulnerable communities and urges the public to remain vigilant, follow official advisories, and download the Pakistan NDMA Disaster Alert App for timely updates and safety guidance.
