Federal Ministers Review Progress on “One Patient, One ID” Initiative

Islamabad: June 12, 2025

Federal Minister for IT & Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja and Federal Minister for National Health Services, Regulations & Coordination Mustafa Kamal jointly chaired a high-level meeting to review progress on the “One Patient, One ID” initiative.

The joint meeting, comprising senior officials from both ministries, conducted a detailed review of the project’s implementation and current status.

During the meeting, the Ministry of IT announced it would fund connectivity for all Basic Health Units (BHUs) and schools in Islamabad. This measure will support the Ministry of Health’s vision for a referral system and ensure the timely and efficient delivery of healthcare services to the public.

Furthermore, under the directive of IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja, the project's completion deadline was revised. Originally scheduled for completion by June 30, 2026, the new deadline is now December 31, 2025, reflecting the government’s commitment to accelerating its digital health agenda.

Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja stated, “Inter-ministerial collaboration in digital health is a positive development,” and emphasized that the initiative represents a practical step toward realizing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision of a Digital Nation Pakistan.

Health Minister Mustafa Kamal added that each citizen’s national ID number will now serve as their medical record number, allowing doctors instant access to a patient’s medical history. He noted that the burden on major hospitals in Islamabad is increasing, and strengthening the primary healthcare system through this initiative will enhance the referral system.

Both ministries reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration for the timely and successful execution of the project.
