Chairman Senate of Pakistan Hon’ble Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani held a constructive meeting with President of Italian Chamber of Deputies (Speaker Lower House), H.E. Mr. Lorenzo Fontana. The Chairman is on official visit representing Pakistan at inauguration ceremony of the new Pope.
Hon’ble Chairman emphasized the highest importance Pakistan attaches to its cordial relations with Italy, firmly anchored in sentiments of mutual trust manifested through shared positions and support for each other at multilateral platforms. He particularly thanked Italian principled support within EU Parliament.
Both dignitaries appreciated their historically friendly bilateral ties and reaffirmed commitment to promoting parliamentary cooperation & exchanges as means of highest people-people contact between their friendly States.
The Chairman noted the recent visit by Italian Interior Minister to Pakistan (6–7 May 2025), and welcomed signing of MoU for Migration & Labor Mobility.
The Chairman accorded a briefing on the recent stand off with India adding that Pakistan acted responsibly with restraint and in self-defense according to UN Charter.
The two sides also discussed developments in Afghanistan. Chairman observed that Afghanistan is Pakistan’s brotherly nation adding that Pakistan desires a stable peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan.
His Excellency Fontana thanked the Chairman for interaction and expressed his keenness to avail the invitation extended by his counterpart Hon’ble Sardar Ayaz Sadiq for bilateral visit to Pakistan.
He noted the importance of parliamentary cooperation and expressed desire to conclude an accord between the two Parliaments to formalize cooperation & exchanges.
The interaction with Italian Speaker marks an important step in revitalizing high-level bilateral parliamentary engagement and was concluded with both sides reaffirming resolve for sustained political & parliamentary exchanges.
