Message of the Chairman, National Accountability Bureau (NAB)
On the Occasion of International Anti-Corruption Day – 9th December 2024
Islamabad: December 08, 2024

The causes, effects and methods to combat corruption, are issues that have been very much on the national and international agendas of governments and other policymakers in recent decades as the concepts taking roots are that “the corruption of the best is the worst of all”; and “our worst enemies are not the ignorant and simple; our worst enemies are the intelligent and corrupt”. And in this regard International Anti-Corruption Day is being observed today across the globe to underscore the grievous impact of corruption on socioeconomic and human development. This day is a reminder of our shared responsibility to foster transparency, integrity, and accountability, in all segments of society. Corruption, in all its forms and manifestations, remains one of the grave impediments to sustainable development, and economic prosperity. Its impact is far-reaching which not only erodes the governance structure, but also the lives of ordinary citizens and particularly belonging to the most vulnerable strata of the society as that “corruption is paid by the poor”. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB), as apex anti-corruption agency of Pakistan plays a critical role in fighting corruption and safeguarding the resources of country as without strong watchdogs, impunity becomes the very foundation upon which systems of corruption are built. As Chairman NAB, I would like to reiterate that combating corruption is not just the responsibility of government institutions, but a shared responsibility of the society as a whole. In Pakistan, NAB is continuing its relentless efforts to uproot corruption, promote transparency, and foster accountability. Over the years, NAB has investigated and prosecuted mega corruption cases involving government officials, businessmen, and other influential figures, sending a strong message that no one is above law. Through its tireless efforts, NAB contributed significantly to the national economy through direct and indirect recoveries of more than 6.1 trillion rupees since its inception. The introduction of new reforms like establishment of Accountability Facilitation Cells for the members of Parliament, Provincial Assemblies, Businessmen and Bureaucrats have further strengthened the public trust in NAB. In its relentless drive against corruption, the current year significantly stands out in terms of extensive reforms, victim friendly policies, and heavy recoveries. In this year alone, recoveries amounting to rupees 3800 billion (equivalent to USD 13.57 billion) were made, that happens to be the highest annual figure. Thousands of victims of cheating public and large were compensated, 94 % complaints were decided and 42 % cases were successfully disposed of. Despite these successes, NAB realizes that a lot more needs to be done. The fight against corruption is an ongoing one, and our success depends on the collective will of the people. It is not just about holding wrongdoers accountable but also to create an environment; where integrity, transparency, and the accountability, are made part of culture and taught as fundamental values. On this International Anti-Corruption Day, I urge every Pakistani to reflect and play his role in building a transparent and corruption-free society. From reporting corruption to refusing corruption each of us has an act to play. It is now time to act. Some small steps can generate a societal momentum to further an impactful systemic change. The battle against corruption is a long and complex, but it is a battle we must fight. We must remain resolute and united in our efforts to ensure a better future for our progeny. The path to a corruption-free Pakistan requires hard work, dedication, and unwavering belief that integrity and accountability can transform our nation. Let us renew our collective commitment to integrity and transparency, for a corruption free future. Pakistan Zindabad! ( Note: Not to be published/telecast/broadcast before 9th December, 2024)
