Message of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on International Literacy Day
Islamabad: September 08, 2024

As we observe International Literacy Day, we are reminded of the profound significance of literacy as a fundamental human right and an essential element of dignity. Literacy is not merely the ability to read and write; it is a gateway to empowerment, economic opportunity, and active participation in society. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing the literacy agenda, striving for a more informed and sustainable nation. The government prioritizes providing quality education to all children of school-going age and ensuring that our citizens, regardless of age, have access to life skills education. We recognize that education is the backbone of our society and the key to unlocking potential. To this end, I proclaimed an “Education Emergency" across Pakistan to enroll approximately 26 million children who are currently out of school, aiming to transform Pakistan into one of the most educated countries in the world. We have also introduced free meals, and scholarships as well as other incentives to reduce dropout rates and encourage every child to complete their education. In this rapidly evolving world, technology-friendly literacy and skills development are imperative. The government is dedicated to implementing a comprehensive plan that integrates technology into our education system, ensuring that our youth are equipped with the necessary skills to thrive in a digital economy. Moreover, we are completely cognizant of the critical role that the private sector and civil society play in this endeavor. By forging effective partnerships, we can link education with employment and self-employment opportunities, creating a more robust and inclusive workforce. Let us work together, as a nation, to promote literacy and education for all. Together, we can build a brighter future for our children and our country.
