STANDING COMMITTEE ON MARITIME AFFAIRS REVIEWS KPT AND KDLB MATTERS

The Standing Committee on Maritime Affairs, chaired by Abdul Qadir Patel, convened in Islamabad as part of an ongoing series of meetings focused on the institutional and departmental structure of maritime affairs, including their issues and future prospects. The meeting featured presentations and discussions on a range of topics, including the Karachi Port Trust's (KPT) organizational structure, ongoing litigation cases, deputations, and the KDLB matters. The session was attended by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh, Secretary Syed Zafar Ali Shah, Chairman of KPT, Senior officials of the Ministry & KPT. KPT was tasked with presenting its organizational structure, the number of cases in litigation, and the number of deputations. The Chairman of KPT provided an overview of the current organizational strength, human resources, and ongoing litigation details. The NA committee reviewed the employee hierarchy in KPT, including the number of officers and officials working at Karachi Port Trust, and pending litigation cases. The Chairman directed KPT to present a detailed report on these cases along with their financial impact. He suggested that the next meeting be held at KPT. Labor union representatives from the Karachi Dock Labor Board (KDLB) also were present in the Committee meeting. Federal Minister Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh acknowledged the laborers' presence and the ongoing board formulation process. He emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts and assured that labor issues would be addressed while maintaining operational balance. Chairman of KPT emphasized the importance of bringing stakeholders together. He reiterated that laborers and employees are important stakeholders, and KPT is ready for a workable solution to resolve valid concerns. Chairman Abdul Qadir Patel said that labor issues at KDLB is a priority and emphasized the importance of collaborative solutions.
