“Effective multilateralism, under the umbrella of an empowered United Nations system, can be promoted only if it enjoys the “widest possible support of the UN’s Member States”: said Ambassador Munir Akram while exercising Explanation of Vote (EoV) on “Our Common Agenda” Resolution today in the General Assembly’s 34th Plenary meeting, says a press release received here today from New York.
The Pakistan delegation joined in the consensus adoption of the draft resolution on “Follow-up on the report of the Secretary-General entitled Our Common Agenda” today at the United Nations.
Pakistan delegation had expressed however, certain concerns with regard the content of the original version of the draft resolution and the process relating to its consideration in its Explanation of Vote (EoV).
Ambassador Munir Akram expressed his appreciation to both; the Permanent Representative of Singapore, for his imaginative and constructive approach “in negotiating the agreed text” and to the Permanent Representative of Saudi Arabia, for his “mediatory efforts and the delicious Arabic Coffee which fueled the spirit of compromise”.
Ambassador Munir Akram also expressed Pakistan delegation’s appreciation to the Secretary-General for the submission of the Report on “Our Common Agenda” saying: “The resolution, as adopted, will enable Member States to give close consideration to the “rich and substantive” report submitted by the Secretary-General in response to the request of the General Assembly in its 75th Anniversary Declaration”.
“We look forward to being informed by the Secretary-General of the proposals in the Report on which he has mandates within agreed frameworks, such as the 2030 Agenda, the SDGs and the Paris Agreements, and to be closely consulted on his endeavor to accelerate the implementation of these agreed frameworks which must remain our highest priority” he expressed his hope. “Pakistan will contribute constructively to achieving this objective” he concluded.
Our Common Agenda report brought by the Secretary General of the United contained recommendations across 4 broad areas for renewed solidarity between peoples and future generations, a new social contract anchored in human rights, better management of critical global commons, and global public goods that deliver equitably and sustainably for all. The Common Agenda presents the Secretary-General's vision on the future of global cooperation through an inclusive, networked, and effective multilateralism .
A group of governments had proposed a follow-up process for the proposals contained in the UN Secretary-General’s ‘Our Common Agenda’ report. The text would call on the UN General Assembly (UNGA) President to initiate an intergovernmental consultation process on the report’s recommendations and ways to take them forward. Denmark, Fiji, Georgia, Mexico, Qatar, Rwanda, Singapore, and Sweden jointly submitted the draft (A/76/L.8), ‘Follow-up to
the report of the Secretary-General entitled “Our Common Agenda”,’ on 3 November 2021.
Earlier, Pakistan had underscored the need for promoting conflict resolution and dispute settlement during a discussion held in October at the United Nations on Secretary-General’s landmark report that sets out his vision for the future of global cooperation.
