Statement by Ambassador Munir Akram, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to The United Nations and President of UN ECOSOC at the Informal Plenary meeting of the General Assembly on UN75 Declaration
Islamabad: December 16, 2020

Ambassador quotes from statement delivered. The Pakistan delegation thanks the Secretary General for his briefing and shares the challenges and opportunities identified by him. We are at an important inflection point in world history. The United Nations is the critical universal Organization which must shape the international order in the 21st century. This international order will have to be multilateral - in a multipolar world. The United Nations will be at the core of this order. The international community needs collective responses to address the multiple, complex and emerging challenges of our times. In our view, the SG’s recommendations should encompass: ? Advance the fundamental principles and purposes of the UN Charter especially sovereign equality, non-use or threat of force, non-intervention and the right of peoples to self determination. ? Promote the reduction of rising international tensions and arrest the escalating global nuclear and arms race which poses an ever-present threat to global peace and security. ? Activate multilateral, UN-led measures for the resolution of the proliferating disputes and conflicts in various parts of the world; end foreign intervention, occupation and the illegal annexation and denial of the right of peoples to self-determination. ? Oppose the rise of fascist and war-mongering regimes that trample human rights and international terrorism, especially state sponsored terrorism. ? End racism, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism and gender, cultural and other forms of discrimination and promote universal observance of human rights. ? Promote the full and universal realization of the Sustainable Development Goals, recovery from the Covid pandemic and the Paris climate goals through the mobilization of adequate finance, investment in infrastructure, a fair-trade regime and taxation system and full utilization of science and technology for development. ? Reimagining and reviving the UN, building on its strengths and addressing its weaknesses. The General Assembly must be revitalized, the Security Council made more representative of the entire UN membership and the ECOSOC fully utilized as the central coordinator of the global economic governance system. The General Assembly, the ECOSOC and other relevant intergovernmental bodies should enrich the Secretary General’s recommendations with contributions reflecting the priorities of all Member States. The Secretary General can count on the active support of the Pakistan delegation in this endeavour. The world order should be reimagined and restructured on the immutable principles and purposes of the Charter and the imperatives of peace, security and prosperity for all.
