Scientific methodology must be applied to crop science. This was said by Federal Secretary National Food Security and Research (NFSR), Omar Hamid Khan on Friday while meeting a delegation of Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO).Federal Secretary added that SUPARCO can help in increasing crop yield. He was of the point of view that we want to establish positive linkage between NFSR and SUPARCO.Even SUPARCO can help been generating authentic data for locusts. The organization can help in geo spatial agricultural monitoring and damage assessment of crops.
SUPARCO utilizes satellite imagery along with ground info to contribute in effective and efficient decision support in Agriculture. It also uses Crop Yield Forecasting System which results in timely, accurate and reliable crops estimates. SUPARCO also generates data on Crops Masks resulting in synoptic measure for crop insurance. With the availability of large multi-sensor, temporal Satellite datasets and advent of computational capacity, machine learning/Deep learning techniques have scope for rapid crop assessment .SUPARCO wants to start the Geo-Spatial Monitoring of Major and High Value Crops project with NFSR.
The outcome of the project will be generation of Crop statistics for crop area, yield and production and making of monthly crop bulletin and seasonal reports of major crops .Linkage of satellite based crop statistics data with provincial crop reporting to come up with a combined realistic crop assessment.
