Speaking at the launch of Pakistan's first waste-to-Fuel transport project Karachi breeze line, Malik Amin Aslam, Advisor to Prime Minister on Climate Change said that developing urban transport is not just a matter of supplying buses. In the Era of environmental Concerns, a critical consideration is how to power the system.
The advisor said this would be the first zero emission metro bus in the world that use bio methane produced from animal waste as a fuel resource. This is the first transport project approved by the UN Green Climate Fund and it would bring multiple environmental and economic benefits. It has been declared one of the “Global Innovators” at the Dubai Energy Summit. This is a landmark project in environment-friendly fuel resources for public transportation, He added.
He reiterated that climate change remained a top priority for the federal government to support the Prime Minister's vision to make Pakistan clean and green country.
He further said that Pakistan continued to take important initiatives to reduce the effects of climate change.“We are working on five-point agenda and introduction of electric vehicles is one of them. Our Government has approved the first electric vehicle policy under which a target has been set to convert 30 per cent of four- and tri-wheelers in the country into electric vehicles,” Malik Amin Aslam said.
He further added that an existing transport system is the one of the major contributors in greenhouse gases emissions in Pakistan. Whereas the transport system’s contribution in pollution is 20 percent in developed world, in Pakistan it is around 40 percent.
However, the introduction of E vehicles like cars trucks buses and tri wheeler will benefit in a way that it reduces the emissions of Greenhouse gases by 60-70%. The prime minister’s advisor emphasized.
He said the cost of running the car and buses will become cheaper around one third or 30 percent less price than that of petrol and CNG or other fuels.
He stated that another important benefit is oil import bill will get decreased, which is said to be $2 billion annually.
The new industry will boost in Pakistan, with creation of new jobs. Malik Amin Aslam said
He said that any initiative with such potential should be encouraged and replicated across the country. And that will lead to transformation in the auto industry and transport system in the Pakistan. Mr. Imtiaz Ahmed Shaikh, Sindh Minister for Energy said that Karachi BRT system will provide a more reliable, safe transport system which make transport cost effective and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
MS Xiao Hong, country Director ADB Pakistan Resident mission said that this project will set an important green footprint for all future transport projects in Pakistan.
The Karachi Breeze Red Line is the first Transport system in Pakistan to use bio-methane produced from animal waste as a fuel resource for its 213-bus fleet.
