PR No. 207 New WHO Representative in Pakistan calls on Health Minister Dr. Zafar Mirza Collaboration in Improving Health System Discussed Islamabad: April 29, 2019

Dr Palitha Mahipala World Health Organization Representative in Pakistan called on Dr. Zafar Mirza, Minister of State for Health in his office. Welcoming the WHO Representative who has recently taken office Dr. Zafar Mirza lauded his contribution to improving health systems in Srilanka during his tenure as Director General Health and Additional Secretary Health in his home country. Srilankan health system has a long record of strong performance and its progress towards Universal Health Coverage stands out as an example for the rest of the world. We can learn a great deal from the Srilankan experience in strengthening Primary health-care and provision of Universal Health-Care said the Minister. Dr Palitha Mahipala congratulated the Minister of State Dr Zafar Mirza on assuming office. Dr Palitha, had a one on one meeting with the minister to discuss the agenda on health in Pakistan. Issues like developing Islamabad Capital Territory as a model for strengthening of Health System with a focus on Primary Health Care was prominent among the issues discussed in the meeting. Dr Palitha Mahipala assured Dr Zafar Mirza of WHO’s full support from all the three levels; Headquarters, Regional and Country office to the Health Ministry. It was resolved to work in close coordination to uplift the health system and achieve health related goals in the Sustainable Development Goals. ***
