PR No.188 LEGAL REFORMS WILL CHANGE THE LIVES OF VULNERABLE, LAW MINISTER TELLS DR. SANIA NISHTAR Islamabad: April 26, 2019

Federal Minister for Law and Justice Barrister Dr. Muhammad Farogh Naseem has said that the Legal Reform Bills, that are expected to be introduced in the Parliament next week, will change the lives of the vulnerable. He was talking to the Chairperson of Poverty Alleviation Coordination Council Dr. Sania Nishtar during a meeting on Thursday. Law Minister and Dr. Nishtar discussed the implementation of Ehsaas Program’s interventions and Policy Actions. The Program is a special initiative of the Prime Minister for poverty alleviation. Dr. Sania Nishtar told the Law Minister the Program needs to be owned by all the Ministries and the Departments of the Government as it has various elements that need collaboration of the Ministries and Divisions with the Poverty Alleviation Division. Dr. Farogh Naseem explained to Dr. Sania Nishtar, how the legal reform package was meant to change the lives of weak and vulnerable sections of the society. He said that Legal Aid and Justice Authority will help the women and children involved in criminal cases. Previously District Judges had the authority to make decisions regarding Legal Aid. We are working to make it more accessible to vulnerable women and children, he said. He further said that the upcoming legislation will ensure that the women are not deprived of their property rights and Women Ombudsman would take notice of any such case and deal it as a civil suit. He said that Letters of Administration and Succession Certificates will be linked up with NADRA to help the legal heirs of the deceased. He apprised Dr. Sania Nishtar regarding Whistleblower Protection Act, Mutual Legal Assistance and amendments expected in the Civil Procedure, in order cut the length of the civil suits. He said that the legislation aims to fight injustice and inequality. Dr. Sania Nishtar commended the work of the Law Ministry and told the Law Minister these initiatives would help the weak and vulnerable as poverty is often the result of injustice in the society. Secretary Law Retd. Justice Abdul Shakoor Paracha and Secretary Poverty Alleviation Division Ms. Shaista Sohail was also present during the meeting. *-*-*-*
