PR No. 185 International Labor Organization Country Director meeting with Mr. Malik Amin Aslam Islamabad: November 30, 2018

Ms. Ingrid Christensen, Country Director of International Labor Organization to Pakistan called on Mr. Malik Amin Aslam and congratulated him for assuming the charge of climate change ministry and successful 100 days target. She further expressed her pleasure for Pakistan participation in the upcoming United Nation Framework on Climate Change meeting of COP-24 at Katowice, Poland. She added that International Labor Organization is looking after the work of climate change and its opportunity to mitigate the impact on climate. Ms. Ingrid Christensen apprised Mr. Malik Amin Aslam about the on going projects of ILO in Pakistan. She said International Labor Organization (ILO) office for Pakistan will help tripartite partners and other stakeholders to strengthen national labour and environmental standards compliance with international standards to increase competitiveness, sustainable and inclusive growth in Pakistan. The project will also implement pilot interventions in selected enterprises in textile and leather sectors to develop business cases for compliance with labour and environmental standards. Mr. Malik Amin Aslam adviser to Prime Minister on Climate Change reiterated that the 100 days Performance is a self discipline impose on ourselves for setting new direction and vision, moreover it will be followed in letter and in sprit for the coming five years. He said that the vision of Prime Minister is very clear in launching the Clean and Green Pakistan Project for environmental protection. Mr. Malik Amin Aslam categorically elaborated the five components of the ‘’Clean Green Pakistan’’ project, which are Tree Plantation, Solid Waste Management, Liquid Waste Management, Open Defecation Free Environment and Promotion of Hygiene Behaviors. He said that all stakeholder including federal, provincial and local government bodies will be taken on board to fully participate in mass mobilization movement. He further elaborated that the Ministry of Climate Change has initiated three flagship projects under the banner of Clean Green Pakistan, 10 Billion Tree Tsunami and ReCharge Pakistan. Mr. Malik Amin Aslam emphasized that smog is a hidden killer among us and it is a major cause of lung cancer. He further referred the World Health Organization report that sixty five lack people dies of lung cancer and unfortunately 34% of death casualties among the death tool are from South Asia. Mr. Malik Amin Aslam further informed that we are taking manifold initiatives to mitigate the hazard of smog, which includes brick kilns zigzag technique, vehicle health condition monitoring, restriction on crop burning, mitigating industrial exhaust and reduction on other greenhouse gases. He further reiterated that due to lack of water reservoirs each year we flash out million cubic meter water into sea and that needs paradigm shift in the policy of government and behavior of people and for this cause the government has initiated the project of ReCharge Pakistan, which aims at bringing up the under ground water table by utilizing the river and flood water. ***
