PR No. 45 MINISTER FOR LAW AND JUSTICE CALLS FOR SPECIAL DISPUTE RESOLUTION MECHANISM FOR SETTLEMENT OF DISPUTES BETWEEN PAKISTANI AND JAPANESE BUSINESSMEN Islamabad: October 04, 2018

His Excellency Mr. Takashi KURAI, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan called on Dr. Farogh Naseem, Minister for Law and Justice in Islamabad. Amb. Takashi said that Japan and Pakistan shared long standing cordial ties; however, avenues of this bilateral relationship have not been exhausted and are yet to be explored. H.E. recorded his appreciation of the Government’s resolve to initiate legal reforms in its first 100 days. At this point, the Minister for Law and Justice praised the Criminal Justice System of Japan where conviction rate is more than 99%. Both sides agreed that a lot can be done together to further strengthen the ties between the two states. Dr. Farogh Naseem said a special dispute resolution mechanism should be agreed between the two countries for amicable settlement of disputes between Japanese and Pakistani businessmen rather than having recourse to international arbitration forum. Mr. Naseem also said that given the grave human rights violation in Indian-occupied Kashmir, Pakistan requests Japan to stand by Pakistan’s commitment to a just and peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute, in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the people of Kashmir. Minister for Law and Justice also informed the Japanese Ambassador that draft legislation on Mutual Legal Assistance, in line with international conventions, has been finalized by the Ministry of Law and Justice and soon the same shall be tabled before the Parliament. *****
