PR No.87 Art and Culture of Pakistan Gala Reception in Australia Islamabad: 14th July 2018

The High Commission for Pakistan in Australia intensified efforts to promote the positive image of Pakistan through the effective utilization of the various facets of cultural and public diplomacy. In this regard, the Mission organised an event titled “Art and Culture of Pakistan Gala Reception” at the Pakistan High Commission Building in Canberra. The High Commission invited people from diverse sections of the Australian society which included government officials, Australian Defence Personnale, academia, sports, businesses and media, says a press release received from Australia here today. Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage, diversity and tradition of hospitality and tolerance were portrayed through various performances and activities. Several pieces of art work, handicrafts and artefacts from different regions of Pakistan were showcased. The rich culture of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Balochistan and Kashmir were exhibited through short films, dances and dresses. The arrival of cameleers in late 19th and early 20th century in Australia from the regions, which later became part of Pakistan, was emphasized to connect Australian history with Pakistani people thus virtually creating space for Pakistan at the local cultural landscape. The captivating live work by the Pakistani artists living in Australia illustrating myriad facets of Pakistani art and culture especially enthralled the audience. Dr. Muhammad Khalid Ejaz, the Acting High Commissioner of Pakistan in Australia highlighted the historical evolution and economic progress of Pakistan. He also inaugurated a 12 foot mural entitled ‘a salute to Pakistan’s founding fathers’ depicting the Pakistani flag as well as Quaid-e-Azam and Allama Mohammad Iqbal. The mural was painted by a Pakistani Artist on the façade of the Chancery building. Dr Ejaz assured that the High Commission will continue to patronise Pakistani artists in Australia and would continue to showcase their art work to a wider audience. Air Vice Marshal, Tracy Smart, Australian Surgeon General also spoke at the occasion, recalling fond memories of her wonderful visit to Pakistan. She also appreciated the hospitality and love of the people with whom she interacted. The First Assistant Secretary, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Government of Australia Ambassador Paul Myler traced the history of Pakistan-Australia relations and appreciated the efforts of the High Commission in bringing the people of the two countries closer than before. The Defence Adviser Brigadier Asim highlighted the sacrifices of the Pakistani nation and the armed forces for keeping the country safe. The Acting High Commissioner, Dr Muhammad Khalid Ejaz, also distributed certificates and prizes among the artists and the guests. Cuisines and drinks from different parts of Pakistan were served to the participants during the events. The guests thoroughly enjoyed the event, enthusiastically taking photographs of dresses and handicrafts on the display. The female visitors also availed themselves of the free henna (mehndi/henna tattooing), which was offered at the cultural gala. The event greatly contributed towards presenting cultural heritage of Pakistan in Australia and was appreciate by the Pakistani community.
