PR No.3 PRESIDENT CONGRATULATES MARVI ON WINNING BRITISH SPEAKER’S DEMOCRACY AWARD Islamabad: 01, April 2017

Minister of State and Chairperson BISP MNA Marvi Memon called on the President Mamnoon Hussain in presidency. President of Pakistan, Patron in chief of BISP, congratulated Ms. Marvi on winning British House of Commons Speaker’s Democracy Award.

Ms. Marvi has been conferred Speaker’s Democracy Award by the Speaker of the House Of Commons RT Hon John Bercow MP.

The Speaker’s Democracy Award is an internationally focused award which aims to celebrate individuals which through their leadership and personal courage have made an outstanding contribution to the development of democratic societies. The award seeks to recognize individuals who have contributed to the development of democracy in the broadest sense and encompasses any aspect of country’s democratic settlement including human rights, free speech, rule of law, transparency and anti corruption campaigning. Ms Marvi Memon nominated by Rt Hon Alex Salmond MP won this prestigious award in a tough competition with excellent nominations from all across the globe.

The President stated that empowering more than 5.4 million beneficiaries by giving them access to unconditional quarterly support stipend is a sacred responsibility which is being best fulfilled by Chairperson BISP and her team. . The President admired the marvelous services of the Chairperson BISP in combating poverty in far flung rural areas of Pakistan.  Ms Marvi Memon’s contribution towards grass root networking, women empowerment, gender equality and democratic settlement in Pakistan was also lauded by the President.

On the occasion, Chairperson BISP stated that BISP is contributing towards maintaining the humanity of the beneficiaries by upholding their rights to life, health, education, equality, work and others. She added that this award is an honour for Pakistan, the PML(N) Govt., for those who created BISP, BISP beneficiaries and herself. She thanked the President, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Finance Minister for their firm support for BISP without which this award could not have been won. She also said that the award has been possible due to the prayers of BISP beneficiaries for the government.

BISP, the flagship social safety net of Pakistan has played a key role in reforming social protection system in Pakistan. BISP resulted in 7% drop in poverty, 3% decline in poverty gap and has registered a positive and significant impact on primary school enrollment. Millions of women got identity cards due to BISP, leading them to exercise their political and voting rights. BISP treats women as the head of their families that has led to an increased role in family decision making. BISP made women empowered and financially inclusive as 76% women retain control over BISP stipend.
