PR No. 218Finance Minister Chairs Meeting To Review Public Debt Profile Islamabad: December 22, 2015

Finance Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar here on Tuesday chaired a meeting to review the status of public debt and the arrangements in place for debt management.

The Debt Policy Coordination Office (DPCO) of the Ministry of Finance made a detailed presentation on public debt management. The Director General, DPCO provided the debt stock position as well as the inflows and outflows during the last two and a half years.

It was highlighted that during the last two years the maturity profile of the domestic debt had been lengthened. The cost and risks indicators of public debt portfolio had also improved. The detailed working done by DPCO on periodic reconciliation of domestic and external debt statistics was also presented during the meeting.

The Minister directed the officials concerned to disseminate the debt related data and share it with experts, professionals and the media to develop a clear understanding of the debt related issues, among the general public. He stated that a lot of misperceptions were being created by certain individuals in relation to the country’s debt situation and it was the responsibility of the government to place the facts before the public. He recalled that he had made a detailed statement on national debt in the Senate and placed all the facts before the house.  He appreciated the efforts of debt management team and gave directions for further in-depth analysis on different aspects of debt portfolio in order to have a proactive debt management strategy.

Secretaries of Finance and Economic Affairs and other senior officers attended the meeting.
