PR No.301 Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Highlights The Issue Of Migration At CHOGM Islamabad

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, at the Retreat Session of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), said that migration is an age-old phenomenon in human history. It has come under sharper global focus recently due to the large number of migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea, says a press release received here today from Malta.

The Prime Minister stated that majority of these migrants are fleeing persecution and conflict. In dealing with this crisis, short term approach like erecting barriers to migration would not be prudent. A holistic approach is required which protects the rights of regular and genuine migrants, he remarked.

Pakistan is a country of origin for hundreds of thousands of migrants, and is also home to millions of migrants and refugees, for over 35 years now, the Prime Minister highlighted.

The Prime Minister underlined that Commonwealth is a diverse group of countries which must advocate a long term view of migration with more opportunities for regular and legal migration.

The Prime Minister is in Malta to attend the 24thCommonwealth Heads of the Government Meeting.
