PR No. 85 Message From Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Prime Minister Of The Islamic Republic Of Pakistan On The Occasion Of International Human Rights Day Islamabad: December 9, 2015

The International Human Rights Day is observed all over the world in recognition of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The adoption of UDHR on 10th December, 1948 was an important landmark in the history of the United Nations. It is a guiding source which leads every nation towards a unified goal of guaranteeing freedom, justice and peace for humanity. This day reminds all nations to adhere to protecting inviolable human rights and preserve human values.

Islam is the basic source of human rights. It establishes equality for all human beings and ordains an environment of peaceful co-existence. In the same spirit, the Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan declares non-discrimination on the basis of caste, creed, color, sex, race and religion. I have always urged the nation to join hands to fight against discrimination and fanaticism. My Government has always endeavored to promote national unity and to build Pakistan as a great nation according to the vision of Quaid-i-Azam.

Presently, our Government is facing multiple challenges. Terrorism is one of the biggest challenges to overcome. However, the people ofPakistan stand firm with their Government in the face of this threat. In abating terrorism, the role of Armed Forces, Judiciary and Media is commendable. The role of Pakistani citizens who live with the threat each day is of utmost significance. They have proved to be resilient and undefeated. The Constitutional Provisions for human rights as delineated in Articles 8-28 in the Constitution of Pakistan clearly manifest the commitment of Pakistan as a democratic nation fully guarding human rights and working for their promotion. Pakistan as a responsible State is fully cognizant of its regional and international commitments and implementing human rights related Conventions in true letter and spirit. The Government is also committed to alleviate poverty and to create jobs for young people. Through this we are creating conducive environment for the youth to contribute in nation building process.

The Government has already embarked upon undertaking a number of legislative measures to protect human rights. Autonomous National Commission on the Status of Women and National Commission for Human Rights have been established. On this day, let us re-affirm our commitment in our individual as well as collective capacities for guaranteeing fundamental freedoms and protecting human rights inPakistan.
