A meeting was held between Federal Minister for Climate Change Zahid Hamid and Federal Minister for National food Security and Research Mr. Sikander Hayat Bosan to discuss issue of National Bio -safety Centre at Ministry of Climate Change. It was stressed from both sides that committees working under National Bio-safety Centre should be made more functional and pro active.
Federal Minister for Climate Change Zahid Hamid suggested increasing experts in technical committee. He further said that these experts can be taken on deputation from Ministry of National Food and Research or new recruitment can be made according to laws.
It was also agreed between both ministries to include provincial secretaries to make it more active. They also decided that senior authorities from both ministries sit together and prepare recommendations .The report will be presented to both ministers by next week.
Pakistan is a party to the Cartegena Protocol on Bio-safety under Convention on Bio-safety since May 31, 2009.It is obligatory to devise implementation mechanism for regulation Genetically Modified Organisms and their products. In exercise of the powers conferred by section 31 of Pakistan environmental Protection Act, Pak –EPA drafted and the Federal government notified Pakistan Bio-safety Rules. National Bio-safety Centre (NBC) provides the secretariat support to the Bio-safety committees; National Bio-safety Committee (NBC; headed by Secretary, Ministry of Climate Change, Technical Advisory Committee (TAC); headed by Director General, Pak-EPA and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBCs).
