Assistant Foreign Minister of the Peoples Republic of China, Mr. Kong Xuanyou, visited Pakistan from 20-21 November, 2016. During his stay in Islamabad, he called on Mr. Sartaj Aziz, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs and held delegation-level talks with Foreign Secretary, Mr. Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry.
During Mr. Xuanyou’s call on the Adviser, both sides expressed satisfaction at the continued expansion and deepening of bilateral relations. The Adviser underscored the importance that Pakistan attaches to its relations with China and underlined the need to hold regular high-level exchanges. Mr. Xuanyou thanked Pakistan for its consistent and strong support on issues of vital interest to China. He also reiterated China’s continued support to Pakistan’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. Acknowledging the sacrifices rendered by Pakistan in fighting terrorism and extremism, he assured China’s full support against these menaces.
During the bilateral meeting between the Foreign Secretary and the visiting Chinese dignitary, the entire spectrum of bilateral relations, including China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as well as regional and global issues of mutual concern came under discussion. The two sides agreed to remain engaged and further strengthen cooperation in all these areas for the mutual benefit of the two countries.
The Foreign Secretary briefed the Assistant Foreign Minister on the latest situation in Afghanistan. He underscored the imperatives of reaching a sustainable and lasting peace in Afghanistan through reconciliation and dialogue. The two sides agreed that the international community should remain constructively engaged with Afghanistan especially through the Quadrilateral Consultative Group (QCG) in support of an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned political reconciliation.
The Foreign Secretary also apprised the Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister of the grave humanitarian situation in Indian Occupied Kashmir due to the on-going human rights violations. He expressed the hope that the international community would play its role in calling on India to put an end to blatant human rights violations in the Valley.
Mr Xuanyou briefed the Foreign Secretary on China’s efforts to bring peace and development in the region.
Both sides expressed satisfaction at the continued growth of cooperative strategic partnership. It was noted that timely completion of CPEC’s early harvest projects would significantly contribute towards the overall vision of the leadership of the two countries for the uplift of the region and improve regional connectivity.
