The 75th Plenary Meeting of International Cotton Advisory Committee continued on November 01, 2016 in Islamabad. The first session was chaired by Mr. Dr Abdul Rahim Soomro, Secretary Industries, Government of Sindh. Dr. Tanveer A. Malik made a comprehensive presentation on breeding of heat resistant varieties. While Dr. Shakeel Ahmed, provided a useful insight on assessment of climate change on cotton productivity. Mr. Abeyemi Fahala, permanent secretary of African Cotton Association briefed the participants that how African growers are tackling the issue of climate change.

 

The meeting continued under the chairmanship of Chairman WWF Pakistan Mr. Hammad Naqi. The forum was provided the expert methodology on Better Cotton by Country Manager of Better Cotton Initiative. Mr. S. Hassan from Agriculture Research Corporation from Sudan informed the delegates on ways to reduce water utilization in cotton cultivation. While Mr. Arif Makhdum discussed water reduction in Pakistan’s perspective. Mr. Daniiar Andakulov of Kyrgystan explained water from cold countries’ perspective. Mr. Sohail Harral and Mr. karen Prem discussed the cotton contamination issue during the breakout session.

 

The fourth session was on burning issue of Textile Industry challenges, Mr. Kanwar M. Usman from the Ministry of Textile Industry discussed the issues pertaining to compliance and modernization while the experienced Mr. Andrew Mcdonald from International Textile Manufacturers Federation briefed the participants on threat to cotton from manmade fibers. The Secretary, Ministry of Textile Industry chaired the session due to significance of the topic.

 

The fifth session was interesting, known as world café, the participants were divided into groups and moderated by experts to discuss the important issue how to reduce water footprints. The participants shared their views and importantly their research work and experiences.

 

Mr. Hassan Iqbal, Secretary, Ministry of Textile Industry while briefing the media at the end of the day said that today we had three very important sessions. It was great to hear the experience of such large gathering of cotton experts. He further added that cotton is facing competition from other fibers and Pakistan has yet to explore the potential of cotton, we can easily double our production after obtaining the latest seed technology and following the international practices. In his concluding remarks on the third day of 75th Plenary Meeting was that Government has been in process of approving Plant Breeders Right Bill and other priority is to encourage production and exports of value added products. Tomorrow there would be more interesting topics for the delegates, Mr. Hassan further added.
