PR No. 247 SPECIAL ENVOYS ON KASHMIR BRIEF THINK TANKS AND HIGH OFFICIALS OF EUROPEAN UNION ON HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IN KASHMIR. Islamabad: September 29, 2016

Grave human rights violations in Indian occupied Kashmir call for immediate and emphatic efforts by the international community to bring an end to the brutal atrocities being committed by the Indian forces to suppress the indigenous struggle of the people of Kashmir for their right to self- determination in accordance with the resolutions of UN Security Council.

Prime Minister of Pakistan’s special envoys on Kashmir expressed these views at the roundtable organized by the European Institute of Asian Studies (EIAS), Brussels. MNAs Mr Ijaz-Ul-Haq and Malik Uzair Khan are currently visiting Belgium to highlight the grave human rights situation in IoK at the EU institutions, think tanks and media, says a press release received here today from Brussels.

The special envoys attended the roundtable organized by the Brussels based think tank European Institute of Asian Studies and briefed the participants on the recent crises in IoK and the use of excessive force against the civilians who were peacefully protesting the killing of the Kashmiri leader Burhan Wani. The envoys highlighted the use of pellet guns by the Indian security forces that had led to the deaths and wounding of hundreds of innocent Kashmiris.

The MNAs regretted the fact India refused to allow the UN Human Rights Commission to send a fact finding mission to IoK and demanded that a fair and transparent inquiry be conducted to expose the oppressive brutalities and inhuman measures being taken by India against the courageous people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Recognizing the role of European Union as the flag bearer of human rights the special envoys urged them to fulfil their commitment towards the people of Jammu and Kashmir under the UNSC resolutions. The envoys also briefed parliamentarians and high officials of Belgium as well as European Union about the ever deteriorating condition of human rights in Indian occupied Kashmir resulting in over 100 deaths and 8000 serious injuries due to inhuman use of pallet guns. The envoys stressed that the international community must call on the Indian Government to honour its human rights obligations and allow international humanitarian organizations and medical aid to enter IoK to help the people suffering from recent brutalities.

They also met with the Secretary General of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Mr Dirk Achten, Vice Chair of  Sub- Committee on Human Rights in the European Parliament Mr Christian Dan Preda and  MEP  UK Syed Kamall and drew their attention towards pressing need of support from international community to address this situation.
